You’ve probably always arranged your living room furniture around one fixture, without even thinking twice about it: the TV and TV outlet. For the first time ever, U-verse TV customers have the flexibility to set up their TV virtually wherever they want it — anywhere, in any room, on any wall.

The AT&T* U-verse® TV Wireless Receiver is the first fully-integrated wireless receiver available from any TV provider, and gives U-verse TV customers even more freedom to watch TV when and where they want it, including rooms without an existing U-verse outlet. The Wireless Receiver will be available for order on Monday, Oct. 31. With the U-verse Wireless Receiver, you can enjoy:

    * The flexibility to design your room and arrange your furniture to suit your style, since the TV is no longer tied to the TV outlet. In a customer survey conducted by AT&T, more than two-thirds of respondents said it was very or somewhat important to have the flexibility to move the TV from one location to another without needing a TV outlet.
* The ability to have a TV in rooms not typically wired for TV, including an outdoor covered patio. More than 80 percent of customers said an important reason for having a Wireless Receiver was so they could place a TV in a room where there’s not an existing TV outlet, such as a kitchen or outdoors. More than half of survey respondents said they would most likely use a Wireless Receiver to move a TV to their porch or patio.
* The ability to easily move your TV for special events. Thirty percent of customers surveyed said they would relocate a TV so they could have multiple TVs in a room to watch a sporting or pay-per-view event.
* The ability to move your TV to the guest room or basement for house guests. More than 59 percent of survey respondents said they would relocate a TV to entertain visitors or guests.
* Extra value of one receiver serving multiple rooms. With the flexibility and ease to move your TV around your home, the U-verse Wireless Receiver eliminates the need for dedicated U-verse receivers in less-frequented rooms.
* A faster and simpler set-up process for customers and U-verse technicians. The U-verse Wireless Receiver simply connects to the TV and plugs into a power outlet. A wireless signal strength indicator helps you find the best place for your U-verse Wireless Receiver.
* The same advanced U-verse TV experience and features available today, including the ability to watch live Standard Definition or High Definition TV and access interactive TV apps, your program guide, the U-verse Movies library and more. The Wireless Receiver also has full Total Home DVR capabilities to manage and play back recordings and pause and rewind live TV from any TV in the home.

“For decades, the TV outlet has dictated how viewers can arrange their furniture and where they place their TV,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “Now, for the first time, customers have the freedom to move the TV virtually whenever and wherever they want to, without a special appointment with a service technician. It’s another innovation for U-verse TV.”

The U-verse Wireless Receiver is available for a one-time fee of $49 and a standard $7 per month receiver rental fee.

How it Works

TV content is delivered from the wireless access point near the residential gateway over your in-home Wi-Fi to the U-verse Wireless Receiver, made by Cisco. All U-verse Internet packages include wireless home networking at no extra cost. The easy set-up reduces the time for installation appointments because technicians won’t need to rewire or add outlets, and it’s also simple for existing customers to add a wireless receiver on their own.

How worrisome is “The Netflix Phenomenon” to pay-TV providers? There’s a lot of noise in the space about how content providers have learned their collective lessons and will never allow the video delivery service to have “cheap content” again. As a whole, most have publicly adopted the “we’ll make them pay next time” stance of folks like Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes, who has said he’ll make sure the Starz content he sells Netflix next time will have a more appropriate price tag. Ditto HBO and the rest of TW’s stable of programming.

But the more telling trend is the one that sees operators themselves trying to out Netflix Netflix.

AT&T, for example, earlier this month rolled out a rebranded video on demand service–dubbed U-verse Movies–because, it says, consumers’ movie habits are changing. “We know that our viewers have more ways to rent movies than they did before,” said John Blinkiewicz, AT&T’s executive director of marketing. “As on demand has grown up in the business, we’re pretty confident that we deliver a platform that’s the best in the industry. And now, we think we’re taking that and moving it to what we believe is another level with the launch of U-verse Movies.”

Sign up for our FREE newsletter for more news like this sent to your inbox!

AT&T is focusing on the quality of the service, the depth of content and, perhaps most importantly, the fact that movies will be available on AT&T 28 days before they’re available to Netflix’s DVD by mail service and far earlier than they’re available to stream on Netflix.

“As we see the industry kind of growing up around us, obviously Netflix and Redbox have replaced the Blockbusters and such in the world,” he said. “We want our customers to see us as their first choice, to know that they can get all the first run movies from us sooner, at a higher quality and with a lot more convenience.”

AT&T launched the rebranding effort Jan. 5 and Blinkiewicz said it would “push it out louder and louder” during the year. “On demand is an important piece of U-verse,” he said. “We’re focused on it because it’s such a growing aspect of the service.”

And, he said, keeping pace with–and beating–Netflix is critical.

“It’s extremely important that we beat Netflix to the punch,” he said. “We’ve always had our eyes on the competition. Now that we see the share, or the shift that’s going on in consumer behavior in this space, it’s important for us to refocus our efforts.”

Blinkiewicz said AT&T’s on-demand statistics have been “phenomenal.”

“I’d put our stats against anybody in the industry,” he said. Unfortunately, he declined to share them.

The U-verse Movies rebranding push initially has focused on television, but the goal is to eventually have a fluid, three-screen product encompassing TV, U-verse Mobile and U-verse Online. Those pieces will become deeper ingrained as AT&T develops content-rights deals on a studio-by-studio basis, Blinkiewicz said. But AT&T will continue to pursue them, despite hurdles.

Thursday reported its revenues increased 2.1 percent to $31.4 billion, up $643 million from the same period a year ago, and said its U-verse IPTV service had its best quarter of the year, adding 246,000 subscribers to take it to nearly 3 million subscribers. u-verse subscribersThe telco said U-verse continues to drive a transformation in AT&T’s consumer area: IP revenues now represent 45 percent of AT&T’s consumer wireline revenues, up from 35.3 percent a year ago.

Fourth quarter earnings were $1.1 billion, or 18 cents per share, that’s down from 2009′s fourth quarter earnings of $2.7 billion, or 46 cents per share, but includes a one-time charge of 26 cents per share from its previously disclosed pension accounting change.

For the full year 2010, compared with 2009 results, AT&T’s consolidated revenues totaled $124.3 billion versus $122.5 billion; operating expenses were $104.7 billion, compared with $101.5 billion; net income attributable to AT&T was $19.9 billion versus $12.1 billion; and earnings per diluted share was $3.35 compared with $2.05. Earnings per share, excluding significant items, totaled $2.29, compared with $2.07, an increase of 10.6 percent for the year.

“We had another strong quarter and a solid year,” said Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive officer. “Our major growth platforms – mobile broadband, U-verse and strategic business services – continue to set the pace for the industry, and we’re still early in the growth cycle for all of these areas. Progress across these growth platforms, combined with continued progress on our cost-improvement initiatives, drive our positive outlook.”

The telco said the fourth quarter was the second consecutive quarter to show year-over-year growth in wireline consumer revenue, and it said strategic business services also saw sustained growth.

Revenue from residential customers totaled $5.3 billion in the fourth quarter, up 0.7 percent year over year, their second consecutive year-over-year increase.

In addition to customer adds, AT&T said the U-verse High Speed Internet attach rate continued to run above 90 percent, and 60 percent of subscribers took AT&T U-verse Voice.

More than 75 percent of U-verse subscribers have a triple- or quad-play option, AT&T said, and ARPU for U-verse triple-play customers was more than $160. AT&T said its total video subscribers, which combine the company’s U-verse and bundled satellite customers, reached 4.9 million at the end of the quarter.

The telco also said it posted a 210,000 net gain in wireline broadband connections.

Overall, U-verse revenues rose 73.4 percent from a year ago to $1.3 billion, representing a 7.5 percent increase in wireline revenues per household served. It was 0.4 percent higher than the third quarter as well, marking the 12th consecutive quarter with year-over-year growth in wireline consumer revenues per household.

For the quarter, AT&T saw continued growth in its wireless service as well, with 9.9 percent growth in its wireless revenues and adding more than 2.8 million wireless subscribers.

In recent years, the demand for high-speed internet has increased remarkably. In order to fulfill the demand for information and communication services across Louisville,Ky., AT&T, a provider of wireless, Wi-Fi, high speed Internet and voice services has offered its U-verse services, including AT&T (News – Alert) U-verse TV, AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet to the area.

Mary Pat Regan, President, AT&T Kentucky said that the state is well served by legislative leaders who understand the public policy environment necessary to attract investment and telecommunications expansion and this milestone is an important one, but I look forward to more good news in the future.

Since launching AT&T U-verse services in Louisville, Hopkinsville and Oak Grove, Ky., AT&T has continued its efforts to make the service more widely available to consumers. The company said in the first six months 2010, AT&T invested more than $80 million in its wireless and wireline networks to continue improving service for customers in Kentucky. Upgrades to the AT&T wireless network included new cell sites, expanded mobile broadband coverage and increased 3G capacity.

The company said among available services to AT&T U-verse TV customers are: the ability to manage DVR recordings; download and watch hit TV shows on select smartphones with U-verse Mobile for qualifying customers; the freedom to manage and playback recorded programs from a single DVR on any U-verse connected TV in the house with Total Home DVR; as well as the ability to choose and watch up to four favorite channels at one time with the exclusive My Multiview app. Customers also have access to an extensive High Definition (HD) channel lineup with access to more than 155 HD channels; the ability to program DVR recordings from their Web-connected mobile phone or PC; personalized, on-screen weather, sports, traffic and stock information via AT&T U-bar; the ability to check the current weather conditions and forecasts in any U.S. city with Weather On Demand; and more.

AT&T continued its expansion into the Ohio market for bundled cable, phone and Internet services in 2010, while slowing the expansion of its Dayton-area network.

AT&T began developing its U-verse network in Ohio three years ago, after passage of a state law designed to promote competition with cable companies and development of new video technologies.

U-verse — the company’s bundle of video, Internet and phone services — is available to more than 963,000 Ohio households, according to the latest filings with the Ohio Department of Commerce.

However, the former Ohio Bell installed few, if any, of the large boxes known as video-ready access devices, that convert the digital video service signal for customers, officials said.

“I know Oakwood was one of the communities they decided to venture into,” said Jay Weiskircher, Oakwood assistant city manager. “They originally had a much more aggressive schedule. To my knowledge, they didn’t put in any boxes in 2010.”

Officials in Centerville, Kettering and Springboro confirmed the absence of network expansion in 2010.

While declining to provide local customer figures or comment on expanding its network, AT&T said it added 236,000 customer households in its 22-state market area in the third quarter of 2010, bringing its share to 2.7 million.

In November, AT&T and state officials recognized the three-year anniversary of the passage of a law allowing Ohio Bell into the state’s video franchising system.

In 1997, Ohio Bell (now part of AT&T) agreed to spend $500 million and, along with eight other providers, stimulate competition in Ohio markets.

As of November, AT&T is available to 35.1 percent of the households in the company’s Ohio markets — about 200,000 more than a year ago.

In 2008, the Springboro City Council passed an ordinance designed to manage placement of the network boxes. Last week, officials said AT&T had yet to locate any inside city limits.

“I guess they’ve made a business decision not to locate here as of yet,” Springboro Planning Consultant Dan Boron said.

In neighboring Clearcreek Twp., officials received about $30 in franchise fee payments in 2010 compared with $85,000 from Time Warner, Administrator Dennis Pickett said.

Still, Time Warner, the country’s second-ranked provider, acknowledged its national market share had diminished, while AT&T’s was on the rise.

“Yes, the video service business is very competitive, which is good news for consumers,” Time Warner spokeswoman Mary Jo Green said in an e-mail, noting AT&T was only one of the telephone companies and satellite operators in competition with Time Warner, which reports 14.7 million customers of one or more services.

While still unavailable in some parts of the Centerville, U-verse is gaining popularity in neighborhoods near Centerville High School.

“I really like it,” resident Patti Kemper said. “I know there’s quite a few in my neighborhood.”

While U-verse promotes added DVR utility and video services, Kemper said she switched after Time Warner failed to answer her service call for 10 days in 2008 and has stayed as a result of the channels offered by U-verse.

Ultimately, price was not a big factor, Kemper said.

“I got a deal, of course, the first year. After that, it’s probably about the same thing,” she said.

The City of Portland and AT&T Tennessee today announced that Public, Education and Government (PEG) programming provided by The City of Portland is now carried on AT&T U-verse® TV Channel 99. AT&T U-verse launched in Tennessee in December 2008.

Portland’s PEG channel is now available to all U-verse TV customers in Portland. The launch of AT&T U-verse® services, including AT&T U-verse TV, AT&T U-verse High Speed Internet and AT&T U-verse Voice, is part of an ongoing expansion of AT&T U-verse availability.

“I’m pleased to see AT&T U-verse carrying this PEG channel in our Portland community,” said Rep. Mike McDonald. “Making this programming available on Channel 99 shows AT&T’s continued commitment to invest in Tennessee and support our educational initiatives.”

AT&T U-verse services, which are all delivered over AT&T’s advanced Internet Protocol (IP) network, offer a new alternative to cable with a better DVR, better features and apps, and a better TV experience. AT&T U-verse brings together your TV, broadband, home phone and AT&T wireless services ? all on one bill ? with unique features that provide a new level of integration, convenience and control. And now, AT&T U-verse TV ranks “Highest in Residential Television Service Satisfaction in the South, Three Years in a Row,” according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2008-2010 Residential Television Service Satisfaction Studies.SM

PEG programming on U-verse TV is conveniently located on Channel 99, which enables all U-verse TV customers within Portland to view the PEG programming, even if they reside outside Sumner County. This allows programmers to have a larger audience to show their content, while increasing overall access by allowing consumers to learn about issues outside their own community.

“PEG programming carried by AT&T U-verse TV will provide Portland subscribers with direct access to the valuable programming created to keep our residents informed about the community,” said Amy Wald, executive director, Portland Chamber of Commerce. “We’d also like to thank Representative McDonald whose public policy efforts and support for education encourage innovation and technology throughout Tennessee.”

More Choice, Advanced Features

AT&T U-verse TV is the only 100 percent Internet Protocol-based television (IPTV) service offered by a national service provider, making AT&T U-verse one of the most dynamic and application-rich services available today, with advanced capabilities that customers don’t get from other providers.

Where AT&T U-verse services are available, U-verse TV customers can enjoy numerous features and applications, including the ability to manage their recorded programs, and download and watch hit TV shows from qualifying smartphones with U-verse Mobile; the freedom to manage and playback recorded programs from a single DVR on any U-verse connected TV in the house with Total Home DVR the ability to choose and watch up to four favorite channels at one time with the exclusive My Multiview app; an extensive High Definition (HD) channel lineup with access up to 140 HD channels; the ability to program DVR recordings from a Web-connected mobile phone or PC; personalized, on-screen weather, sports, traffic and stock information via AT&T U-bar; the ability to check the current weather conditions and forecasts in any U.S. city with Weather On Demand; and more.

“We continue to make progress adding local PEG channels and enhancing the capabilities of U-verse TV on a regular basis,” said Lanie Johnson, regional director, external affairs, AT&T Tennessee. “We look forward to launching even more new PEG channels and making more insightful and locally based programming available to our U-verse customers in Tennessee.”

For additional information on AT&T U-verse — or to find out if it’s available in your area — visit AT&T U-verse, or call 800-ATT-2020.

*AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc.

AT&T is extending its U-verse IPTV and DirecTV (Nasdaq: DTV) satellite video services to the small to medium business (SMB) segment in a move to create an even stickier quad-play bundle to compete against cable’s growing presence in a market traditionally ignored by large incumbent service providers.

An ideal solution for SMBs like doctor’s offices with waiting rooms, AT&T will extend the U-verse IPTV service to SMBs in the existing 131 markets across its 22-state local service footprint and use its DirecTV relationship to target opportunities in regions where U-verse is not available yet. The ILEC will also offer the restaurant industry with business packages that include NFL Sunday Ticket.

SMBs have various pricing options to choose from. Eligible U-verse business customers can choose from the $20 a month Basic 20-channel lineup, $32.50 for the Standard 100-channel lineup, and $40 for a Deluxe 200-channel lineup, in addition to optional High Definition services.

Of course, eligible SMBs can also bundle in business U-verse High Speed Internet where available, with download speeds of up to 24 Mbps.

Similarly, SMBs can chose from a number of AT&T’s nationwide DirecTV satellite service packages that range from $34.99 to $59.99.

Bringing video to SMBs has long been a solid business for cable operators and AT&T like Verizon (NYSE: VZ) with its FiOS Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) services for SMBs that includes specialized video packages, had to respond with its own offering.

Cable competitors such as Cox Business, for example, actually see video as one of those services that actually prevent its customers from switching their service to another service provider like AT&T.

“In the SMB space, we find that video is not only desired, but it’s the largest stabilizer to churn,” said Kristine Faulkner, VP of product development for Cox Business in previous interview with FierceTelecom. “We see our customers that have video service have a lower propensity to leave us versus other customers that don’t have video.”

Well, I have AT & T U-verse for about a week now, and I love it. I give a summary. I had CAT-5 in my house already so was to install quickly and easily less. They installed a CAT 5 home run from the NID (phone box outside the house) to the RG (Residential Gateway). The existing phone is connected to a new filter in the NID, so no need to filter inside the house on your phone jacks are more like DSL.
From the RG, the signal travels over CAT-5, the digital STB and from there to the TV. I have two boxes, the main being offered, comes with a DVR and a second (no DVR) is. No longer coax in the rooms. A switch can always be installed (which I did) to provide additional network ports on computer, Media Center, Digital Box and others. The DVR box is connected to my HiDef TV via component outputs. The box supports HDMI but my TV is older and has no HDMI. The optical, was connected my Dolby Digital receiver. The second box is a standard-definition TV via S-video and audio connected.
